When you are running a blog, there is often the question as to how many times per period you should post a new article or post. This week I give my take on a question that I come across often on social media and other bloggers their comment section.
First things first
The first thing that you need to determine is the kind of website that you are running. A website that covers news items or random short posts likely requires more frequent updates than a website like for example Tropical U.P. It is important first to take a step back and look at the kind of value your audience expects and what kind of post schedule fits with their expectations.
What do other big bloggers do?
Another good way to answer this question is to look at the frequency that other bloggers post new updates. Steve Kamb that runs a very successful website called Nerd Fitness posts around 5-6 posts per month the past few months. Many of the other big names in blogging have similar schedules and publish around one post per week.
The schedule you keep for new posts also depend on other media that you use to push your content. Pat Flynn, who runs the very popular Smart Passive Income blog, used to publish a lot of posts but now mainly focuses on his podcasts and YouTube channel.
My strategy for Tropical U.P
As you may have noticed my strategy is slightly different for Tropical U.P with an average post count of around three per week. My current post count is higher is because I want to increase the amount of content on my website. Without any useful content, it is harder for people to find Tropical U.P and once they are on Tropical U.P potentially less attractive to stay.
Once I have created a solid foundation of useful posts it is easier to link between posts and visitors can find content that is valuable to them. I usually aim to write posts that are around a 1000 words for the background and personal posts that I do. Q&A posts, like this one, I allow to be shorter. Google tends to like longer posts, but I think it is also important to keep the reader in mind. Attention spans are getting shorter, and most people don’t have the patience to go through endless lines of text.
What about you?
So there you have it, my advice for when it comes to a posting schedule. What is the strategy that you follow and what works for you? Let me know below in the comments. Thanks for reading and stay awesome! More Q&A posts can be found here.
