Welcome to my seventh monthly review report on Tropical U.P! As I have indicated in my first monthly review, I will post a monthly overview of all the things that I have done the past month. In this post, you can learn about my successes and struggles and how far I am from realizing certain goals.
You might ask why I want to share these details with you in the first place? First and foremost, they are here because they help me with keeping track of my progress. Once I put it online, there is no denying to the things that I should have done, but also sharing the things that went well for me.
The second reason I decided to put these reviews online is that I thought it would be interesting for you to follow changes that are ongoing in my life. As might know, I was laid off earlier and since then a lot has happened. I hope that these reviews encourage and motivate you to chase your dreams.
2016 started with a blast so let’s get started!
TROPICAL U.P – Monthly Review
I started 2016 with a burst of new energy, I have so many plans for 2016 and Tropical U.P, I am sometimes literally too excited to sleep. More than ever before I wake up early in the morning to work on all my projects and now that things are getting more and more traction it is so nice to see where things are going.
The biggest reason for my excitement is the steady increase in my audience. In my annual review I stated that since starting Tropical U.P, this site now welcomes over 2,000 monthly visitors, which I am so grateful for. So traffic to Tropical U.P is increasing and my YouTube account sees a very strong and promising growth.
Initially, my focus wasn’t much centered around YouTube, I am not making any money or planning to make any money directly from YouTube. I did, however, notice that there was a demand for certain tutorials and once I bit the bullet, I actually really enjoy making these tutorials. Now my efforts are starting to pay off and last month, YouTube has been a massive traffic source and lead generator for Tropical U.P!
The above is reason enough for me to already get very excited but it doesn’t stop there. The views on my YouTube channel might not seem like much, but you should realize that this relates to highly targeted views, in other words, people view my tutorials for very specific goals. So if new a video generates 1,000 views, it is likely that I helped a large portion of these people to solve a particular problem, and that feels awesome!
Tropical U.P – Clean Up
With a new year and a bigger audience, it was also time to enhance the experience on Tropical U.P. I have cleaned up a lot of elements on my website. It is definitely important to clean up and declutter your website once in a while, I have written down some tips here.
Tropical U.P – Goal Breaking
January gave me another reason to be very excited, I started the year with aligning my goals and focus for the coming months. I visualized my goals in a roadmap with a focus on short-term (0-3 months), mid-term (3-6 months) and long-term (end of 2016).
Part of short-term goals centered around targets for my email list and my YouTube subscribers. I am very excited to share that I have already reached my target for email subscribers, I am very excited with the rapid growth I experience at the moment.
Other targets and goals that I have set are not yet achieved, but hey, I still have two more months to go! I am looking forward to another goal and target breaking February.
In January, Teresa and I have also been very busy with preparing to move back to Europe. I know we were only living in Vietnam for a little over half a year, but we have decided to pursue other opportunities outside Asia. This was not an easy decision to make but we feel it is the right one.
We have enjoyed our time in Vietnam but it is time for a new chapter in our lives. It is not the first time I have moved in my life and I doubt it will be the last time, but moving, gave me some time to think about cons and vices of being a nomad.
For many people it seems like the dream life to be a nomad, go where the wind takes you, carrying not much more than the necessities in a suitcase. I too have shared such view and philosophy in life. For the past years, I have roamed where I wanted to roam and I was always open for cross-border opportunities.
It feels something has changed now.
I don’t know if it is because I am getting a little bit older, or because I am not only fending for myself, but I feel that being a nomad harms my sense of stability. Another important point is the financial aspect of being a (digital) nomad. Sure you might think that Vietnam is a very cheap country and that being there must allow one to save a lot of money.
Another important point is the financial aspect of being a (digital) nomad. Sure you might think that Vietnam is a very cheap country and that being there must allow one to save a lot of money. It is my experience that this is often not the case. Of course, when you are on a tight budget it is possible to live on a small budget, but why would you stay in a country to have a lower quality life than in your own country. If you want to have a normal lifestyle I found that living in Vietnam is actually almost more expensive than life in the Netherlands.
I have, to be honest that the lack of stability has been the main reason to move back to the Netherlands. We are very glad that we had the opportunity to live in Vietnam and living in another country for some time is something that I believe anyone should strongly consider!
Personal Lessons Learned
In January, I learned a valuable lesson to always stay positive. After a lot of work, things are really taking off for Tropical U.P and I am getting a lot of positive feedback. All this positive feedback is great and really pushes and encourages me to reach further. I learned that being patient and grateful pays off and that being persistent leads to great opportunities in the future!

I hope you enjoyed reading this review, and I hope it inspires you to find your passion and to build an awesome business. Thanks for your support and I am looking forward sharing the next review!
